About Adelaide LodgeThe Adelaide Theosophical Society (an Incorporated non-profit making organisation) was started in 1891 and was situated in 334 King William Street for 82 years from 1914 to 1996 when the Society moved to 310 South Terrace. Sadness at leaving a well-loved building was offset by the prospect of the potential offered by our new, much larger premises. We not only expanded our own program but also we have the capacity to rent out a hall, kitchen and rooms to organisations, or individuals of like mind, to join us in creating a special centre of spiritual learning and healing. Are you interested in joining the Adelaide Theosophical Society?
Around the LodgeShirley I and Shirley Mac represented Adelaide Lodge at a celebration of Emma Fearnside’s 100th Birthday 27 May In 2000 Emma was awarded a SA Senior Citizen of the Year Award (with 4 others) for her work for Animals. NOTE: We will also celebrate with Emma one Friday morning in July/Aug. TBA Phone the office for details if you would like to join us for Morning Tea. Bert Kennell passed away in June 2008. He joined Adelaide Theosophical Society in 1966 with his wife Edna. He served on the Committee, retiring when he was eighty years old. He is remembered for his talks to Members’ meetings, with his special interest in history. Bert worked many years for the Lodge, and also as Manager of the King William Street building. Fixing salt-damp damage and many holes in the roof were some of the larger jobs needing fixing, which he did along with Harry Brocklehurst. Bert and Edna moved to Victoria a while ago to be nearer their family, though he would have missed his favourite local football team! Our Love and Thoughts are with Edna and Family. The Office and Bookshop have been ‘re-sized’ during May –both function well – and more colourful too. Many thanks to all who were involved in the changes… We say GoodBye and Thanks to Julia and Orest Tarnawsky – off to New Zealand for their next adventure in Service. We welcome Louise in the Library, Joseph in Office and Library, and Jaya returning to the Library. We warmly welcome our New Members: Susan Priest, Paul Cannell, Anne Fletcher, Jo Kerr, Tania Newton, Lara Stevens. Joseph Bruce and Paul Fisher. Shirley Ingham REMINDER - It’s Membership Renewal time – unless you joined during the last year, in which case please remember that a part fee is needed during the coming year. Your Committee needs you ---- talk to a Committee Member - find out how you may help President’s remarks at Emma’s celebration: “I speak today for all Members of Adelaide Theosophical Society – Emma has been a Member since 1963 and indeed was granted Life Membership, in recognition of her extraordinary Service to the Society. Madame Blavatsky in Practical Occultism - said that ‘True Theosophy is Altruism’. What is Altruism? – Altruism arises from Empathy - Humaneness, and Respect for the dignity of the Individual. We are all, people, animals, plants, rocks – individuals – and yet, essentially THE ONE. The 1st Object of the Society is To form a Nucleus of the universal Brotherhood of Humanity. That is, we are ALL ONE, and if I harm one, I harm all, including myself. Madame Blavatsky also said that, ‘the statement that Altruism, or pure philanthropy, should be like a Beacon to illume the paths of members’. We should, as Theosophists, pre-eminently promote Brotherhood . There is no Duty higher than Compassion. If our Theosophy has been properly assimilated we will find growing in us an increasing sensitiveness to all the sorrow and struggle that is going on around us, and an increasing desire to help. Emma has indeed been such a Beacon and a help –
It is my pleasure to be here today to celebrate Emma’s life within Adelaide Lodge.” NOTE: Others spoke of Emma’s outstanding, often pioneering work for the Anti Vivisection Union, Animal Welfare League, Animal Liberation SA, T.O.S., and Veg SA. She also worked with SPELD, and was a member of the Medical Ethics Board Univ Adelaide From 1978 to 2005 she cared for Ourata at Klemzig, (the Radcliffe Home). |
